In-Flight Movie Picks (Part 3)

This time went to Texas. By the way, I got myself the BOSE QC35 headset on the way back: awesome stuff, people! Actually my first noise cancelling headphones, and it was totally worth it. The rumble of the aircraft was so distant I could barely hear it, and I could watch movies with volume at 2 or 3! That’s how good that stuff is. Really helped with sleeping too. Only problem is you might not hear the flight attendants talking to you.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War
by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan with Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt. Thor trades Mjolnir for a couple regular hatchets. Still manages to hack his way to victory (sorry for the spoiler). Not unforgettable, not bad. Rather decent brainless entertainment.

The Nice Guys
by Shane Black with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. That was entertaining to say the least. I like how it’s both totally unbelievable (impossible chases, action) and very believable (things never go perfectly smoothly) at the same time.
My favorite movie on this trip.

Me Before You
by Thea Sharrock with Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. Khaleesi as a maid, and no dragons. Enough said.
More seriously, Emilia Clarke is great, and so are the other actors, but the scenario does not bring much surprise.

X-Men: Apocalypse
by Brian Singer with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence. Haven’t seen most of the previous X-Men movies but I must say this one was great entertainment. Although it doesn’t have as charismatic characters as the Avengers 2, it has a much better scenario. Worth a look if only for Quicksilver’s introduction scene.

La Vache (One man and his cow)
by Mohamed Hamid, with Fatsah Bouyahmed, Lambert Wilson. A pleasant comedy but probably only if you’re French (and even then, not guaranteed).

Maggie’s Plan
by Rebecca Miller with Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore. Was it good or bad? I wish I cared enough to know. Great actors, boring story. Of course I am not a reference in romantic comedy. Let’s say I watched it for the sake of research.

All the Way
by Jay Roach with Bryan Cranston, Melissa Leo. About president Johnson coming to power after the assassination of JFK. I recommend for Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad lead) ‘s awesome performance.

In-Flight Movie Picks (Part 2)

Another business trip to the US, this time to Monroe, near Seattle. This was the occasion to binge-watch another bunch of in-flight movies.

  1. Money Monster by Jodie Foster, with George Clooney and Julia Roberts: great thanks to Clooney and Roberts.
  2. Demolition by Jean-Marc Vallée with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Naomi Watts: some boring moments, but I love Jake Gyllenhaal, who actually plays a character similar to Nightcrawler.
  3. Everybody Wants Some!! By Richard Linklater with Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin. (Pleasant, with some fun parts, although never truly hilarious. A bit disappointed).
  4. A Hologram for the King by Tom Twyker with Tom Hanks, Sarita Choudhuryt (Good one, Tom Hanks is awesome as always).
  5. Tale of tales by Matteo Garrone with Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel. (Good, though the tales don’t really intertwine much.  More like a series of mostly unrelated stories).
  6. The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos, with Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz. (Completely out of the left field, but I loved it. Not the kind of movie you’d expect to watch in a plane, and definitely not for everyone. Check it out only if you’re into weird and absurd stuff. Now I want to see all the movies from this director).).
  7. Elvis & Nixon by Liza Johnson, with Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey (quite fun).
  8. Born to Be Blue by Robert Budreau with Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo (I guess it was kinda good, but it’s not my kinda movie. Plus I can’t stand jazz, and the movie is about Chet Baker, so…).
  9. Au nom de ma fille (Kalinka) by Vincent Garenq with Daniel Auteuil, Marie-Josée Croze (Not great movie, but the subject is a true story that kept me hooked till the end). Daniel Auteuil is a great actor.

In-Flight Movies Picks

So I went to the US for a business trip.
That’s usually the time I catch up with movies and watch stuff I would not normally watch. So here we go for a roundup of my in-flight picks (in no particular order):

Note: some are rated quite low on Rotten Tomatoes (linked), but I guess I am not too regarding and it’s just me. It also means I should really not care about ratings when watching movies.
That Misconduct got a 8% is quite baffling to me.

1. Dirty Grandpa (quite fun)
2. Misconduct (great)
3. 10 Cloverfield Lane (excellent)
4. Gods of Egypt (not good)
5. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (not great)
6. Triple 9 (quite good)
7. Hail, Caesar! (Good)
8. Franny / The Benefactor (interesting)

Hotel Zeppelin San Francisco

I know this may seem out of place on this blog, but I recently had a business trip to San Francisco, and I stayed at Hotel Zeppelin.

This hotel’s interior was so great that I took the time to snap some pictures. The hotel was still under renovation inside, but no doubt they found their style.

Nowhere Man Complete Season On Youtube

Nowhere Man is the story of a photojournalist who sees everything in his life taken away from him after taking a photograph depicting people being hung in Vietnam.

I might have already talked about this show on this blog, but here is the thing: Nowhere Man is one of my favorite shows ever.
And it still is. Of course, since it is from the mid-nineties (before smartphones were ubiquitous), some episodes have grown a bit old, but it is mostly relevant overall. I personally put is on par with X-Files. And I loved X-Files too.

The problem is that it is extremely hard to find this show nowadays, because there was only one season, and then the show got mysteriously cancelled. And then even the DVD (which was distributed only in the US) is not selling anymore. Bruce Greenwood, who plays the main protagonist Thomas Veil, is an awesome actor and really carries the show. Each episode is a story of its own, but of course it is better to watch them in order.

Which you can do with the YouTube playlist below.

The image quality is not great — but you can think of it as a chance, since it might make this playlist less likely to be taken down.

More about Nowhere Man here on IMDB. You can see I am not the only one mourning the cancellation of this show up to this day.

Assassin’s Creed Hoodie

…and other incredibly stylish men’s clothing on this website: www.shermancarter.com .

I saw an ad on Facebook this week for an Assassin’s Creed-inspired hoodie, on sale ($24.99 instead of $138, and that includes worldwide shipping!).  At this point I must say that I am not into fashion shopping in general. So I surprised myself browsing again and again through the site and had to restrain the urge to buy everything. Honestly, I have never seen so stylish, cool and affordable men’s clothes before (which might explain why I never care for men’s clothes much so far).

I am not sure how long the sales are going on, but the timer got reset a few times already, so I think it is selling well; which is not surprising.

Sticky Tape Residue Removal Tip

I learned a useful tip the other day. I had left tape on a white photographic background for a while, and it left sticky residue on the plastic surface.
As I asked if anyone had seen the tape remover spray, a coworker told me they usually use this odorless insecticide spray.

I was skeptical at first but I must say it worked wonders.
I just sprayed it closely over the sticky residue, waited one minute and then swiped everything easily.
Plus, unlike dedicated removal spray, it didn’t smell at all –and most importantly– you are probably more likely to have it at home than a sticky remover.

LOL Mini Figures

This are not LEGO, and I doubt these are approved League Of Legends (LOL) products either. Manufactured by Becool, these figures were found at a stationary near my apartment. They are priced KRW2,000 (about 2 dollars), which prompted me to doubt the existence of a licensing deal between Riot Games (creators of LOL) and Becool.
Either way, those are kind of cute and I like the fact that they have 2 faces (like all other Becool mini figures I have seen).

Flipme…

Today someone invited me to like their new Facebook Page.
Nothing wrong with the page and I guess the person meant well by changing their profile pic in memory of the victims of the Sewol ferry accident.

Still, the Facebook notification somehow felt kinda wrong.

You can judge by yourself…
